Appearance: The Black Widow Frontosa exhibits the typical body shape of the Frontosa cichlid, which is deep-bodied and elongated with a sloping forehead. What sets the Black Widow apart is its striking coloration. The body typically has a bluish-gray base coloration with bold, jet-black vertical bars running from the dorsal fin to the belly. These bars give the fish a resemblance to the markings of a black widow spider, hence the name.
Size: Like other Frontosa cichlids, the Black Widow Frontosa can grow to a substantial size. Adults can reach lengths of up to 12-14 inches (30-35 centimeters), with males generally growing larger than females.
Habitat: In the wild, Frontosa cichlids inhabit rocky areas along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where they form social groups known as colonies. They prefer habitats with rocky caves and overhangs where they can seek shelter and establish territories.
Behavior: Frontosa cichlids, including the Black Widow variant, are relatively peaceful for cichlids but can become territorial, especially during breeding or when establishing a hierarchy within a group. They are best kept in a species-specific tank or with other large, relatively peaceful cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika.
Diet: In their natural habitat, Frontosa cichlids feed primarily on small fish and invertebrates found among the rocky substrate. In captivity, they readily accept a variety of foods, including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, frozen foods like krill and shrimp, and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and territorial behavior, Black Widow Frontosa cichlids require a spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and caves. A tank size of at least 125 gallons is recommended for a small group of Frontosa cichlids. Water parameters should mimic those of Lake Tanganyika, with a pH between 7.8 and 9.0 and temperatures ranging from 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C).
