The Bolivian Ram, scientifically known as Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, is a popular freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby.

  • Physical Appearance: The Bolivian Ram has a distinctive appearance with a compressed, oval-shaped body and pointed fins. Its coloration is typically a beautiful golden-yellow to olive-green base with iridescent blue and pink markings on its fins and body. They also have two black spots on their sides, one near the gills and the other towards the tail.

  • Size: When fully grown, Bolivian Rams typically reach a size of around 3 to 3.5 inches (7.5 to 9 centimeters) in length.

  • Behavior: This species is known for its peaceful demeanor, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums. However, they can become territorial, especially during breeding or if they feel threatened. Despite their territorial nature, they are generally not aggressive towards other fish species.

  • Diet: Bolivian Rams are omnivores and accept a wide range of foods. They will readily consume high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. Offering a varied diet consisting of quality flake or pellet food supplemented with occasional treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or small crustaceans helps to maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

  • Tank Requirements: Bolivian Rams prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. They thrive in soft to moderately hard water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. The ideal water temperature for Bolivian Rams ranges from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

  • Compatibility: Bolivian Rams are generally peaceful and can coexist with a wide range of community fish species, including tetras, rasboras, danios, and peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish. They can also be kept in pairs or small groups, with multiple females per male to reduce aggression.

  • Care: Providing stable water parameters, regular water changes, and a well-balanced diet are essential for the health and well-being of Bolivian Rams. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so maintaining excellent water quality is crucial. Additionally, they may appreciate slightly subdued lighting and a peaceful environment to thrive.
