Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) are stunning freshwater fish originating from the Congo River Basin in Africa.

  • Appearance: Congo Tetras are renowned for their vibrant colors and graceful appearance. Mature males display striking hues of iridescent blue, with elongated fins that may have red or orange highlights. Females are slightly less colorful, exhibiting a silvery body with hints of blue and yellow.

  • Size: These tetras can grow to a size of around 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 centimeters) in length, with males often being slightly larger and more colorful than females.

  • Habitat: In the wild, Congo Tetras inhabit slow-moving rivers, streams, and tributaries within the Congo River Basin of Central Africa. They prefer densely vegetated areas with subdued lighting and ample hiding spots among roots and submerged branches.

  • Behavior: Congo Tetras are peaceful and social fish, best kept in groups of at least six individuals. They exhibit a lively and active swimming behavior, often exploring all levels of the aquarium. Despite their energetic nature, they are non-aggressive and get along well with other peaceful community fish species.

  • Diet: In their natural habitat, Congo Tetras are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet of small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In captivity, they readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Providing a balanced diet enriched with plant matter helps maintain their vibrant colors and overall health.

  • Tank Requirements: To accommodate Congo Tetras, provide a well-planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and subdued lighting to mimic their natural habitat. They thrive in water temperatures ranging from 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C) and prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small group of Congo Tetras.

  • Compatibility: Congo Tetras are peaceful and sociable fish that can coexist with a variety of tankmates, including other peaceful community species of similar size. However, avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish that may intimidate or harass them.
