The Hockey Stick Tetra, also known as the Hemigrammus hyanuary, is a lesser-known tetra species that is occasionally available in the aquarium trade.
Appearance: The Hockey Stick Tetra gets its name from the distinct black marking on its caudal fin that resembles a hockey stick. Its body is typically silver or olive-green in color with a horizontal black stripe running from the nose through the eye to the base of the tail. The caudal fin is transparent with a bold black marking at the end, resembling the shape of a hockey stick.
Size: Hockey Stick Tetras are relatively small fish, reaching an adult size of around 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 centimeters) in length.
Habitat: These tetras are native to South America, particularly in the Amazon River basin and its tributaries. They inhabit slow-moving or still waters with dense vegetation and subdued lighting.
Behavior: Hockey Stick Tetras are peaceful and shoaling fish, meaning they prefer to be kept in groups of at least six individuals. They are active swimmers and appreciate a well-decorated aquarium with plenty of plants, driftwood, and hiding spots.
Diet: In the wild, Hockey Stick Tetras are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In captivity, they readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Providing a varied diet helps ensure their health and vitality.
Tank Requirements: Hockey Stick Tetras are relatively hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for most community aquarium setups. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and a temperature range of 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C).
Compatibility: Hockey Stick Tetras are peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates, including other peaceful community fish species of similar size. They should not be housed with aggressive or fin-nipping species that may harass or stress them.
