The Leopard Senegal fish, also known as Ctenopoma acutirostre, is a freshwater species native to West Africa, particularly Senegal and Gambia. It belongs to the Anabantidae family, which includes labyrinth fish known for their labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air.

  • Appearance: This species has a striking appearance, characterized by its leopard-like spots, which give it its common name. The spots are irregularly distributed over its body, which typically has a light brown to olive coloration. Its body is elongated with a slightly compressed shape. The fins are often adorned with fin rays that extend beyond the fin membrane, adding to its distinctive appearance.

  • Size: Leopard Senegal fish can grow up to around 6 inches (15 centimeters) in length, making them suitable for medium-sized aquarium setups.

  • Habitat: In the wild, these fish inhabit slow-moving streams, rivers, and swamps with dense vegetation. They prefer water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and temperatures ranging from 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C). Providing them with ample hiding spaces, such as plants, driftwood, and rocks, mimics their natural habitat and helps reduce stress in captivity.

  • Behavior: Leopard Senegal fish are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding or if kept with similarly sized or shaped tankmates. They are also known for their labyrinth organ, allowing them to take gulps of atmospheric air, which is beneficial in poorly oxygenated water conditions.

  • Diet: In the wild, they feed on a varied diet consisting of small invertebrates, insects, and crustaceans. In captivity, they accept a variety of foods, including high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and live foods. Offering a diverse diet ensures they receive proper nutrition and helps mimic their natural feeding behaviors.

  • Tank Requirements: A well-filtered aquarium with ample swimming space and hiding spots is essential for keeping Leopard Senegal fish. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group. Water quality should be maintained with regular water changes, and the tank should be securely covered as these fish are known to jump.
