Red anthias fish, also known as Pseudanthias squamipinnis, are stunningly vibrant fish commonly found in coral reef environments throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

  • Appearance: As their name suggests, red anthias are predominantly red in coloration, with hues ranging from deep crimson to bright scarlet. They often have contrasting yellow markings and subtle hints of purple or pink. They have elongated bodies with a deeply forked tail fin and prominent dorsal fin.

  • Social Behavior: Red anthias are social fish that form schools or harems consisting of a dominant male and several females. They maintain a hierarchical structure within these groups, with the largest and most colorful male being the leader.

  • Habitat: They inhabit coral reefs and rocky outcrops in clear, warm waters, typically at depths ranging from 15 to 100 meters (50 to 330 feet). They prefer areas with strong water movement where they can feed on planktonic organisms.

  • Feeding: Red anthias are planktivores, meaning they primarily feed on small zooplankton and phytoplankton suspended in the water column. In aquariums, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and copepods.

  • Aquarium Care: Keeping red anthias in an aquarium requires careful attention to water quality and tank mates. They thrive in well-established reef aquariums with ample swimming space and hiding spots. Due to their social nature, they should be kept in groups of at least five individuals, including one dominant male.
