  • The Red Rainbowfish, also known as Glossolepis incisus, is a vibrant and popular freshwater fish species native to Papua New Guinea.

  • Appearance: As the name suggests, Red Rainbowfish are known for their striking red coloration, particularly prominent in males during the breeding season. They have a sleek, elongated body shape and typically grow to a size of around 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters) in length. Their fins may have hints of orange or yellow, adding to their colorful appearance.

  • Habitat: Red Rainbowfish are found in clear, flowing streams and rivers in their native Papua New Guinea. They inhabit densely vegetated areas along the banks, where they can find shelter and ample food sources. In the aquarium, they thrive in well-oxygenated water with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots among live plants and driftwood.

  • Behavior: These fish are known for their peaceful temperament, making them suitable for community aquariums with other peaceful fish species of similar size. They are active swimmers and prefer to be kept in groups, where they can exhibit natural schooling behavior. However, they may display some territorial behavior, especially during breeding.

  • Diet: Red Rainbowfish are omnivores and will accept a varied diet in captivity. They should be fed a balanced diet of high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Offering a diverse diet helps ensure their health and vibrant coloration.

  • Water Parameters: These fish prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. They are also sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes and good filtration are important for their well-being. The water temperature should ideally be kept between 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C).
