True Flying Fox Fish have a slim, elongated body with a distinct black horizontal stripe running from the nose to the tail. The body color is usually silver to light brown, with transparent fins that may show subtle golden or dark edging. As they mature, their markings become more defined, giving them a clean and attractive appearance.
Size:
True Flying Fox Fish typically grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in captivity. They have a moderate growth rate when kept in a spacious tank with proper water conditions and a balanced diet.
Behavior:
True Flying Fox Fish are active and alert swimmers. While generally peaceful when young, they can become territorial as they mature, especially in smaller tanks. They are best kept singly or with fast-moving, similarly sized tank mates.
Diet:
These fish are omnivorous. In the wild, they feed on algae, small insects, and plant matter. In captivity, they readily accept algae wafers, sinking pellets, flakes, and blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini.
Tank Requirements:
True Flying Fox Fish require a well-maintained aquarium with good swimming space and hiding areas. A minimum 3–4 feet tank is recommended. Strong filtration and water flow help mimic their natural environment and keep them healthy.
Water Parameters:
True Flying Fox Fish adapt well to a range of conditions. Ideal water parameters include a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 and temperatures between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F). Regular water changes are important to maintain water quality.
Compatibility:
They are compatible with most active community fish of similar size. Avoid keeping them with slow-moving or long-fin fish, and do not keep multiple Flying Fox Fish together in small tanks to prevent aggression.
