How to Care for Goldfish: The Ultimate Guide

Goldfish are one of the most loved pet fishes across the world. But just coz they are common doesn't mean they are low-maintenance. If you're a beginner in fishkeeping, this blog is just for you! Let’s break it down in a simple way so you can keep your goldfish happy and healthy.

What Makes Goldfish Special?

Goldfish are colorful, peaceful and have their own cute personality. They can live for 10 to 15 years (sometimes even longer!) if you take good care of them. But yes, they do need a bit more than just a bowl.

Do Goldfish Really Need a Big Tank?

Yes, they do! A small bowl is not enuf for a goldfish. They produce a lot of waste, and need space to swim around. Go for at least a 75 liters tank for 1 goldfish, and add 10 gallons more for each extra goldie.

What Kind of Water is Good for Goldfish?

Goldfish like cool freshwater, around 20-23°C. No need for a heater in most homes in India. But you must use dechlorinated water.

Quick Tip: Always use a water conditioner when adding tap water.

Also, goldfish hate sudden changes. So do water changes slowly and not all at once. Do a 30% water change every week.

Do They Need a Filter?

YES! A good filter is like a lifeline for your goldfish. Goldfish poop a lot and a filter helps keep the water clean. Choose a filter that is rated for bigger tanks coz of their high bioload.

Clean the filter media in old tank water (never tap water) once a month.

What Should I Feed My Goldfish?

Goldfish are always hungry – don’t fall for their drama

Feed them goldfish flakes, pellets, and sometimes boiled peas (without skin) or spinach. You can also give them bloodworms or daphnia as treats.

Feeding Tip: Feed them twice a day, but only what they can finish in 2-3 minutes.

Can Goldfish Stay with Other Fish?

Yes, but only with peaceful and slow swimmers. Don’t keep them with tropical fish that like warm water or with fin-nippers.

Good tank mates:

  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows

  • Rosy Barbs

  • Weather Loaches (if your tank is big)

Why Is My Goldfish Sitting at the Bottom?

Goldfish sit at the bottom if:

🔹 Water is dirty

🔹 They are overfed

🔹 They are stressed

🔹 There’s a problem in water quality

Check the water, stop feeding for a day, and slowly do a partial water change. If they still look sick, ask an aquarium expert or vet.

Goldfish Care Quick Checklist

  • Big tank with filter

  • Dechlorinated water

  • Regular water changes

  • Quality food, no overfeeding

  • Check water temp & quality

  • Don’t overcrowd

  • Observe them daily
