The Black Bristlenose Pleco, scientifically known as Ancistrus sp., is a striking variant of the common Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus cirrhosus).
 
Appearance: As the name suggests, the Black Bristlenose Pleco displays a dark black or deep brown coloration throughout its body. Like other Bristlenose Plecos, it has a flattened body covered in bony plates and is adorned with numerous bristle-like appendages on its head, particularly prominent in mature males.
Size: Black Bristlenose Plecos are relatively small compared to other plecos, typically reaching lengths of around 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) when fully grown. However, some individuals may grow slightly larger with optimal care and conditions.
Habitat: Originating from South America, particularly the Amazon River basin and its tributaries, these plecos prefer slow-moving streams and rivers with rocky substrates. They seek shelter among rocks and driftwood and graze on algae and biofilm.
Tank Requirements: Providing a well-aerated aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and rocks is essential for Black Bristlenose Plecos. They appreciate a planted tank but require open spaces for swimming. A tank size of at least 20 gallons is suitable for a single specimen or a small group.
Water Parameters: Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial for the health of Black Bristlenose Plecos. They prefer a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C) and a pH level between 6.5 to 7.5. Clean water with good filtration and regular water changes are necessary.
Diet: Black Bristlenose Plecos are primarily herbivorous and feed on algae, biofilm, and other vegetable matter. In the aquarium, they should be offered a varied diet that includes algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and cucumber, and sinking pellets or tablets formulated for bottom-dwelling fish.
Compatibility: These plecos are generally peaceful and can coexist with a wide range of community fish species that are not aggressive or overly territorial. However, avoid housing them with large or aggressive fish that may harass or stress them.
