The Denison Barb, also known as the Red Line Torpedo Barb or Roseline Shark, is a striking freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing rivers of southern India.

  • Appearance: Denison Barbs are renowned for their vibrant red lateral line that runs horizontally along their silver bodies. They have a torpedo-shaped body and a forked tail fin, with a sleek and streamlined appearance. Their fins are generally transparent with red accents.

  • Size: These barbs can grow up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) in length when fully matured, making them one of the larger barb species commonly kept in home aquariums.

  • Behavior: Denison Barbs are active, schooling fish that thrive in groups of six or more. They are relatively peaceful but can display territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods. Providing plenty of swimming space and hiding spots can help minimize aggression.

  • Diet: In their natural habitat, Denison Barbs are omnivores, feeding on a variety of plant matter, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they readily accept high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.

  • Tank Requirements: These barbs prefer well-oxygenated water with a moderate to strong water flow, mimicking their natural riverine habitat. They thrive in tanks with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots among driftwood, rocks, and live plants. Water parameters should be kept stable, with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C) and a pH between 6.5 to 7.5.

  • Compatibility: Denison Barbs are generally peaceful and can be kept with a variety of other peaceful fish species that share similar water requirements. However, they may nip at the fins of long-finned tank mates, so it's best to avoid housing them with slow-moving or delicate species.
