The Golden Algae Eater, also known by its scientific name Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, is a popular freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby.

  • Physical Appearance: The Golden Algae Eater has a sleek, elongated body with a flattened belly. Its coloration is typically golden-yellow or olive-green, with a series of dark vertical stripes running along its body. These stripes often fade or become less prominent as the fish matures. Its dorsal fin is located towards the posterior end of its body.

  • Size: When fully grown, the Golden Algae Eater can reach a size of up to 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters). However, in captivity, they often grow slightly smaller, depending on tank conditions and diet.

  • Behavior: This species is known for its peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community aquariums. However, it can become territorial, especially towards its own species or similar-looking fish, particularly when kept in smaller tanks or inadequate space.

  • Diet: As their name suggests, Golden Algae Eaters primarily feed on algae. They are excellent at cleaning algae from tank surfaces, including glass, rocks, and decorations. However, they will also consume other types of food, including sinking pellets, flakes, and blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber. It's essential to provide a varied diet to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

  • Tank Requirements: Golden Algae Eaters require a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of hiding places and vegetation. They prefer a tank with a moderate to strong water flow and ample space to swim. A tank size of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a single Golden Algae Eater, with additional space needed for each additional fish.

  • Water Parameters: They thrive in tropical freshwater aquariums with stable water conditions. Ideal water temperature ranges from 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C), with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5.

  • Compatibility: Golden Algae Eaters are generally compatible with a wide range of peaceful freshwater fish species, including tetras, danios, rasboras, and other community fish. However, they may become aggressive towards similar-looking fish or other bottom-dwelling species if they feel crowded or threatened.

  • Care: Regular water changes, good filtration, and a balanced diet are essential for maintaining the health and well-being of Golden Algae Eaters. Additionally, be cautious when handling them as they have small spines near their mouth that can become entangled in nets or cause injury if mishandled.
