If you're thinking about keeping a Betta fish (also called Siamese fighting fish), you're in for a colorful and lively experience! These beautiful fish are one of the most popular aquarium pets, especially for beginners. But just like any pet, bettas need proper care to live a happy and healthy life.
In this blog, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know about Betta fish care in a simple and easy way.

Why Choose a Betta Fish?
Betta fish are known for their vibrant colours, flowing fins, and independent behaviour. They are hardy and can even survive in low-oxygen water, which makes them a favourite for new fishkeepers.
But just because they are easy doesn’t mean they don’t need care!
What Tank Size is Good for Betta Fish?
Most people think Bettas can live in a tiny bowl.
That’s a big mistake.
Ideal tank size is minimum around 18-20 litres.
More space = less stress = longer life!
Also, it’s better to keep a lid on the tank. Bettas love to jump sometimes!
Do Bettas Need a Filter and Heater?
Yes, they do!
Filter: Keeps water clean.
Heater: Bettas are tropical fish. They like water between 24°C to 28°C.
If the water gets too cold, your Betta can fall sick.
What to Feed Your Betta Fish?
Betta fish love variety in their diet. Just like us, they get bored too!
Feed them:
Betta pellets (main food)
Freeze-dried bloodworms (treat)
Brine shrimp (once in a while)
Feed only once or twice a day and just a small pinch. Overfeeding is common and can cause problems.
Can Betta Fish Live With Other Fish?
This is a common question.
Male Bettas should not be kept with other male Bettas – they are called fighting fish for a reason.
They can live with peaceful, non-fin-nipping tankmates like:
Corydoras
Snails
Neon tetras (in big tanks)
Avoid keeping them with guppies, tiger barbs, or other bettas.
How to Keep the Tank Clean?
Dirty water = sick fish.
Do a 25–30% water change every week.Use a gravel cleaner to remove waste from the bottom.Don’t forget to use dechlorinator in tap water before adding it to the tank.
How to Know If Your Betta is Healthy?
A happy Betta is active, curious, and eats well.
Look for:
Bright colours
Smooth swimming
Fins spread wide
Warning signs:
Clamped fins
Not eating
Staying at bottom
White spots or fuzzy patches
If you see any of these, your Betta may be stressed or sick. Contact a local aquarium expert or pet store for help.
Do Bettas Get Bored?
Yes! They are smart and need some fun too.
You can add:
Floating toys
Betta mirrors (for short time only!)
Live plants and hiding spots
Change the setup once in a while to keep things exciting!
Betta Fish are Easy, But They Need Love Too
Betta fish are low-maintenance, but they’re still living beings who need care, clean water, and good food. If you follow these simple steps, your Betta can live for 3 to 5 years, sometimes even more!
So go ahead, set up your Betta tank, and enjoy watching this beautiful creature swim around.
